Today began as normal as any other day. I woke up more than an hour before the alarm, got up and came to the PC. Chris was already up and had left me a message on IM. We chatted for a few minutes and I went afk to make coffee.
My poor coffee. I’m still in mourning.
I cleaned the coffee pot and emptied yesterday’s used grounds.
I got the coffee out of the cabinet and opened it while letting the carafe fill with water.
I LOVE the smell of freshly opened coffee grounds! My favorite coffee for daily drinking is Folgers Gourmet Supreme Dark Roast. It’s rich, thick, creamy and very dark. I use a little more than half a cup of grounds for the usual 8 cups I brew on a daily basis.
I put the grounds into the filter, poured the water into the coffee pot and placed the carafe onto the burner. I came back to the PC to chat with Chris while waiting for it to finish.
Mmmmm… the smell of freshly brewed coffee!
You know how you hear little sizzles from time to time when you’re making coffee? Little droplets of water slide down the side of the coffee pot and sizzle when they touch the burner…
I love that sound. It means my coffee is almost done!
Then I hear the sizzle again.
And again…
And… again…
That’s far too much sizzling for a single pot of coffee. Something’s wrong with my coffee maker!! Call the police! Call an ambulance!! Call the President!!!
As I walked toward the kitchen I could see it… Oh the horror! Coffee and grounds all over the counter top. Those lovely grounds sliding down the side of the carafe and mingling with the mess on the counter top!
My coffee maker has the easy-pour feature to allow you to stop the flow at any time and get a cup of coffee, even if it isn’t finished brewing yet. When I put the carafe onto the burner, I hadn’t aligned the spout with the lever that, when compressed, allows coffee to drip into it.
Uncompressed lever means the grounds and water stay in the top… until it overflows causing a huge mess in your kitchen.
Along with a horribly wasted first pot of coffee.
Join me in a moment of silence for the coffee grounds that were wasted.

Oh, I hurt all over!! I’ve done this before. I’m sorry for your loss… I loved the story!! hehehe
I know. It’s a terribly painful story. Now I go check the pot at least twice and even wiggle it to make sure it is seated correctly lol.
